Commentary The Devil Wears Prada is an amusing drama based on the 2003 novel of the same title by Lauren Weisberger. Meryl Streep does a terrific acting job as a tough, merciless boss of a well-renowned fashion magazine company, as does Anne Hathaway as her frustrated yet determined employee. The story is also very entertaining with a strong, climactic ending.
Plot Summary Andrea "Andy" Sacks (Hathaway), fresh out of college, wants to get a job as a journalist, but in order to get experience she decides to take a job with Runway, a fashion magazine firm. Her boss Miranda (Streep) is nearly impossible to please and keeps her constantly on her toes. Very frustrated at first, Andy gradually adjusts to her new career and does a great job. She ends up going to an important fashion show in Paris in place of her coworker Emily, much to Emily's dismay. She also ends up prioritizing her job over her boyfriend. In the end, however, she goes back to her old self and gets the job she'd wanted beforehand as a journalist.
This film gave me a feeling for how cut-throat a lot of big businesses can be as well as what's required to be a success. Andy manages to do a good job and please her boss, but this success comes at the price of becoming like her boss and alienating many of her friends and co-workers. I think the moral of this film is that to get where you want to go, you often need to make sacrifices, but hopefully in the end you won't end up turning into your adversary!
