Commentary Seabiscuit is the incredible true story of the famous race horse Seabiscuit, which was a longshot but ended up winning numerous races, becoming a great inspiration for millions of Americans during the Great Depression. The movie is based on the best-selling 2001 book "Seabiscuit: An American Legend" by Laura Hillenbrand.
Plot Summary
Following the accidental death of his young son, Charles Howard (Bridges), a self-made millionaire, takes an interest in horse racing. He meets Tom Smith (Cooper), a seemingly washed-up trainer, but is nevertheless impressed with him and hires him. Smith spots Seabiscuit, grandson of the famous race horse Man O'War, and sees potential in him, though no one else seems to. Smith encourages Howard to purchase Seabiscuit.
At first, Seabiscuit won't let anyone ride him. But then along comes Red Pollard, a jockey having a tough time, and Seabiscuit immediately takes a liking to him. Under Tom's training, Red and Seabiscuit start winning races and breaking records.
Seabiscuit becomes an inspiration to millions of Americans during the Depression. However, to prove his full worth, Howard proposes a race against War Admiral, then the greatest race horse. It's owner, Sam Riddle, at first does not agree to race War Admiral against Seabiscuit, believing him to be inferior, but eventually he does due to public pressure.
