Commentary Yellow Submarine is a wonderful animated movie featuring many great Beatles' tunes as well as animated characters in their likenesses. (Their real voices are not used, except in their songs and in a short non-animated segment at the end of the film.) The film is sort of a psychedelic adventure.
I first saw Yellow Submarine when it first came out, at age six, and I must say I was rather disturbed by parts of it. I don't think it's a great movie for young kids, but I grew to love it years later.
Intoduction: The movie begins in a fictional place called Pepperland, which lies somewhere beneath the sea. Pepperland is a peaceful and happy paradise until an army of Blue Meanies attack them. Pepperland's mayor sends Old Fred (called Young Fred by him), to sail aboard the Yellow Submarine and get help.
The Voyage: Fred travels to Liverpool where he rounds up the Beatles, who agree to help him. They end up taking a wild journey through the the Sea of Time, the Sea of Science, the Sea of Monsters, the Sea of Nothing, the Sea of Heads (the foothills of the headlands), and the Sea of Holes before finally arriving in Pepperland.
Pepperland: Once there, they manage to defeat the Blue Meanies with their music. In the end they rescue Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which the Meanies had entrapped in a bubble of blue glass. Finally the Meanies agree to join Pepperland in a joyous festival of love and music.
Like all the Beatles' music, the music in this film is wonderful. The film features the following songs:
All Together Now
When I'm 64
Only a Northern Song
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
All You Need Is Love
It's All Too Much
