Commentary Back to the Future Part III is the third and final episode of the Back to the Future trilogy. In this one, Marty and Dr. Emmett Brown visit the Old West in 1885. Like the other BTTF films, this one is full of action, adventure, and humor. Unlike the others, however, this movie also has elements of a Western. It also involves the romance between Doc Brown and Clara Clayton (Steenburgen).
Plot Summary
In Back to the Future Part III, both Marty and the Doc travel to the Old West in 1885. Doc ends up there by accident and spends eight months there. In 1985, Marty and the younger Doc discover that the Doc gets shot to death by Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen, Biff's great grandfather. Marty decides to travel back to 1885 to save him and bring him back alive. While there, he discovers his great-great-grandparents, who put him up on their farm. He also finds the Doc and warns him of his fate. He also encounters Mad Dog, who threatens to kill him. Marty ends up saving the Doc but endangering his own life when he challenges Mad Dog to a dual. Meanwhile, the Doc meets and falls in love with schoolteacher Clara Clayton.
Time Travel Paradoxes Back to the Future Part III doesn't involve as much time travel paradox as the preceding two films, but does involve some. Marty takes a photo of the Doc's tombstone back with him to 1885 to see what happens to it. The picture starts to change as soon as Marty saves his life by challenging Mad Dog to a dual. The Doc's name gets erased, but the words "Here Lies" as well as the date remain. The Doc interprets this to mean that someone will end up being killed in the dual, perhaps Marty. Marty avoids his doom by backing out of the dual at the last minute.
