Commentary Jaws is a fantastic and terrifying horror film. Though I'm not a big fan of horror movies, Jaws is great!
Besides being scary, Jaws is also a thrilling story, culminating in personal triumph in the face of impending doom.
Special Effects
Terrific! Mainly because of the realistic use of the mechanical shark, blood, and body parts.
Book
Based on the book "Jaws" by Peter Benchley. The book was adapted from reality where sharks killed four people and injured others in New Jersey. The media caused a stir because of these events in 1916.
Plot Summary Jaws is the terrifying story of a 25-foot long, three-ton great white shark that terrorizes the fictitious summer resort town of Amity Island in New England. The shark ends up killing four innocent bathers before the mayor finally agrees to charter a small expedition to hunt it. Eventually they do kill the shark, but not before their boat goes down and the captain gets swallowed by the shark.
The character development is also very good, particulary regarding Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), who ends up taking charge of the hunt for the shark in the second half of the film.
Cultural Significance Because of the general pessimistic mood of the public in the aftermath of Vietnam, Watergate and the gas crisis: disaster and horror movies were popular in the 70s.
Jaws was one of several...others being The Exorcist, The Posseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno.
Sequels Jaws spawned three sequels, none of which were anywhere nearly as great as the original.
