Commentary Saturday Night Fever is the classic dance movie which popularized disco in the late '70s. Plot Summary Tony Moreno (John Travolta) is a young man who lives in Brooklyn with his parents, brother and sister and works at a paint store. Every Saturday night he goes out to the local disco. There he meets Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), who agrees to enter a dance contest with him. During the movie, Tony learns more about life. In the end, influenced by Stephanie, he decides to move to Manhattan to pursue a better life there.
Cultural Significance The main influence of Saturday Night Fever was on disco. Disco was already gaining popularity, but the success of Saturday Night Fever really made it take off. The soundtrack album became a huge hit before the movie was even released. The Bee Gees' career also took off largely because of the movie and the soundtrack, which contains six of their hit songs.
